From the Big Apple to the Big Easy!

After a whirlwind departure from NYC last Friday, 6/6, Omondi and I arrived in New Orleans on Sunday evening. My exit from 1365 W. 7th was a bit intense and a bit crazed but only to be expected in a move like this. My poor little Corolla was loaded to the brim with dishes, clothes, bedding, picture frames and other essentials including my toaster oven, bike pump and vacuum cleaner!

We headed south to DC and stayed with our dearest and newly engaged friends Liz and Jonathan and talked Obama campaign shop in the sultry heat. DC, per usual in June, was hot and muggy and needed a decent ocean breeze. Alas, we sought relief in a funky jazz club and got our first taste of southern blues, more to come soon I hope! Our trip south continued through Chapel Hill (with a stop to see my dear friend Sarah) and then onto Atlanta to stay with my extended-extended family and photographer extraordinaire, Cara Pastore. We dined on hush puppies and fried bass overlooking Hot-lanta and then departed early the next morning for the Big Easy. 7 hours later, at 80 mph, we arrived, in the sweaty flesh in NOLA!

Since then I've been immersed in "Induction" - TFA language for Orientation. I am no doubt the oldest person here, at the ripe old age of 29 (just about - the bday is coming up on 6/24) but I have met some other folks who are 4-5 years out of college. I'm realizing how a mere 7 years out of college (and a MA and some professional experience) can be so defining. I think it will truly be an asset to my classroom.

I'm living in the dorms, freshmen style. I have a super sweet roommate and we share a very narrow space. It's only through the weekend, then our whole group of 267 fly west to Phoenix for 5 weeks of "Institute" - aka, Peace Corps Stage. More to come later, :) KD

I am so excited you will be blogging about your times in cajun country! It will be kari's blog "part 2" (I loved reading when you were in Indonesia too). Can't wait for more.
